RELEASE NOTES  - For past year

Current Release: Version 6.40.0016  Feb 24, 2004 - Feature Release

Features:

1. GSW Telnet Client Software for Pocket PC 2003 class devices is now included.
Of course it has the full features offered in the GSW Telnet Client software for Pocket PC 2002 devices including International Character support and Automatic Upgrade of client software.


2. Capability to specify that all child processes started in the session will be terminated when the session ends. The Graceful
Termination will be attempted first. Use the environment variable gwtn_job_control.

    To Enable:
        set gwtn_job_control=y

    To disable
        set gwtn_job_control=n

    The default setting is enabled.

3. Server side banner changed to show support for Windows 2003.

 

Defect Resolution:

1. Pocket PC 2002 Client setup software sometimes failed to launch the device side setup, which resulted in failure to install the
software.

Features:

1. GS_ADMIN
Sort and reverse sort capabilities on columns via clicking on column titles or by selecting menu items.

2. GS_ADMIN Command Line Options
Launch GS_ADMIN from the command line or your application. Provides the ability to launch Monitoring/Shadowing for specific sessions via filters. Also can terminate one or more sessions.

3. GS_ADMIN
Produce a snapshot of the telnet server status that is sent to a text file.

4. GS_ADMIN
New session status added to gs_admin to assist in identification of situations when customer's application stops responding.

5. Diagnostic Capabilities
Increased diagnostic capabilities for internal use.

Defect Resolution:

1. Inclusion of international character support feature in version 6.30.0014 introduced a defect in the Session Administrator
which could cause exception in gs_admin.exe on some systems.
This defect did not exist prior to Version 6.30.0014.

1. Improved Chinese language support by including the option to select.

2. SAPConsole integration. The SAP user name support in the GS_Admin utility.
        NOTE: This feature requires the GSW Rocket Engine 1.39.0002 or later

3. Added capability to configure up to 100 ports for the Georgia SoftWorks Telnet Server to listen on. 

    Launch a different application based on the port number.

4. The Client Side Bell feature allows to specify the number of times the bell (beep) will sound.
    The registry parameter name is BellCnt.

Defect Resolutions:
1.  Traditional Chinese characters were doubled when connecting to a server with Traditional Chinese version of Windows
installed.

1. Multinational Character Support including Double-Byte and Unicode characters.

2. Added capability to configure up to 10 ports for the Georgia SoftWorks Telnet Server to listen on. Launch a different application based on the port number.

1. The GSW Client software sometimes failed to initialize properly when encryption and domain user credentials were specified on the command line.

1. Broadcast a message that is displayed on one or more active Telnet sessions. Available via the Session Monitor or via a command line utility that can be used with your favorite scheduler for scheduled broadcasts.

1. The gs_clnt.exe fails when spaces occur in printer names.

New Features:

1. Trailing form-feed character in Passthrough printing has been made conditional based on the gwtn_ff_in_passthrough login script variable. The possible values are 'y' and 'n'

    For Example:

        set gwtn_ff_in_passthrough=n

        Default: Use the form-feed character (gwtn_ff_in_passthrough=y).

2. Setup program preserves user's changes to txt files in the telnet server root directory.


Defect Resolutions:
1. The Graceful Termination processing used invalid character code when the ENTER keyword was used.

    STATUS: FIXED


2. If you attempt to do a gs_get on a file that does not exist on the client machine, a zero byte file was created on the server. This behavior has been eliminated.

1. Session Suspend logic was modified to always shutdown and then close the client socket. (Internal Algorithm Improvement).

1. Support added for the GSW Telnet Client for the Pocket PC 2002.

2. Support added for the GSW SuperSSL

3. Improved Performance for 'Passthrough' printing. The data block size was increased to 500.

4. The logic of the Inactivity Timeout was changed to disallow transition to the Suspended state even if the Session Saver was configured.

1. SCO Emulation: Resolved conflict between BACK-TAB and SHIFT-F2.

    SHIFT-F2 is now assigned to: ESC [ 1 2 z
        and
    BACK-TAB remains assigned to: ESC [ z

1. Improved Handling of Keyboard Input for 8-bit terminal emulations. SS3 and CSI sequences are always properly recognized.
    Especially useful with INTERMEC devices.

1. Inclusion of GSW Client Automatic Upgrade Feature in version 6.26.0003
    introduced a bug in the Session Saver when used with the GSW Telnet
    Client. This bug did not exist prior to Version 6.26.0003

The following features require versions 6.26 or higher of both the GSW Telnet Server and the GSW Telnet Client. It is NOT backward compatible. Please upgrade the Client and Server.  If you are not using the Georgia SoftWorks Telnet Client then there there are no related version compatibility requirements.

1. GSW Client Automatic Upgrade!
    Allows the GSW Telnet Client to automatically be upgraded to the current version upon connection.

In certain cases on high use systems, slow connect times were observed.

1. Execute Commands on Client from within the telnet session!

A new utility called gs_exec is included in the telnet server installation directory. The syntax is:

gs_exec client_side_command_line

Example:

gs_put d:\xfer\file1.doc c:\received\file1.doc
gs_exec winword c:\received\file1.doc
gs_get c:\received\file1.doc d:\xfer\file1.doc

This will transfer the document file1.doc to the local computer, run the MS Word editor to edit the document, and then transfer the document back to the server.

A command-line option /scmddelay was added to the client software gs_clnt.exe to modify the time for how long the results of the client side commands are displayed in the gs_clnt.exe window. The defaults is 2000[ms].

1. Autologon feature implemented for GSW Client.

Obtain full telnet capability without performing the registration process. Use the Floating License to quickly move the telnet server to a different machine. 

The next feature is especially useful for ASP customers!
2. Logon Limitations

    Limit the number of sessions allowed by a specific User ID.

    Limit the number of times a specific User Id can be logged on via telnet.. 

    Limit the number of sessions allowed from a specific IP Address.

    Limit the number of logons that can occur from a specific IP Address. 

3. IP Addresses can be specified as ranges and wild cards can be used.
  When using the gs_logon.txt and gs_auto,txt files IP address ranges and wildcard characters can be used.

In certain cases Automatic Reconnect could perform invalid  reconnect when the AUTO_BY_USER_AND_IP option is chosen.

File Transfer in both directions is now complete with the addition of the GS_GET utility

1. File transfer capability from Client to Server.

A new utility called GS_Get is included in the telnet server installation directory. The syntax is:

GS_GET <source_file_path> <destination_file_path>

For example:

gs_get c\books\dealers.doc d:\corba\hints\dealers.doc

This will transfer the file c:\books\dealers.doc from the client computer and save it as d:\corba\hints\delears.doc on the server.

Version 6.17.0001 - November 15, 2000   

New Features:

All of the features in this release are excellent in a variety of applications.

However they are of special interest to RF Barcode/Data collection applications

  1. Automatic Logon for 3rd Party Clients

    With 3rd party clients you can pre-configure the User Id, Password and Domain to expedite connection time to the 
    telnet server. Especially useful with RF Barcode/Data Collection Terminals when coupled with the Session Saver.

  2. Color - Re-mapping - All Clients
    T
    his feature allows you to re-map (change) the colors the user will see when using the Georgia SoftWorks Telnet Server.

    Modify your application colors so they are easy to read on a grayscale device without any source code changes. Also re-map your colors to fit a customer's look and feel with source code changes.

    Get the colors just the way you like on the Hand Held device.

 

  1. New Java Applet Parameters that allow flexible display options.

    useTopLeftLocation - Places the work area in the top left corner of the rectangle specified for the applet. 

    useMSDOSFrame - Specifies if the Classic MSDOS frame will be drawn around the work area of the applet.

    userBorders - Specifies if the Borders will be drawn around the applet.

    useBoldFont - Tells the applet to use the Bold Font.

    Great for the RF Terminals with a Browser when connecting via telnet.

  2. New Java Applet Parameter specifies the Host to connect.
    address - Indicates the address of the host to connect.

Version 6.16.0005 - November 3, 2000

NOTE: For Version 6.16:
When using the Georgia SoftWorks Telnet Clients you must have at least Version 6.16 or higher of both client and server to be compatible.

Protocol changes occurred with the implementation of the new File Transfer Feature requires synchronization of client and server versions for compatibility.

Backward compatibility exists in most cases for all future versions.

Version 6.15.0001 - September 21, 2000

1. Event Logging
The System Administrator can generate reports based on Telnet Log Information.
- Session Events and Activities are logged in an ASCII comma delimited file. 

2. True Client Side Printing
Client Side Printing can now accommodate up to 9 printers per User!

1. When NUMLOCK is enabled, the arrow keys (NOT the arrows on the the numeric keypad) were sent as if the shift was depressed.  The defect existed only on Windows 95/98 systems.

Version 6.14.0001 - July 25, 2000

New Features:

1. Remote Registration utility that allows the serial number to be applied from a remote location via telnet.

During the 30 day trial period the serial number can be applied using the new command line utility GS_RR.exe. 

Syntax is:

GS_RR serial_number


2. User Manual Accessible via Icon on Desktop

The User Manual (in MS Word format) is now accessible via an icon if MS Word or the MS Word view is installed on the server.  The User Manual is copied to the '<telnet_root>\Doc' folder.
